English Picnic and Language Games...

At SK Tuanku Fatimah Noraniah Mohd Yusof and Charlotte Lewis wanted to take the topic of 'Delicious Food' outside of the classroom and into the hearts and minds of the year two pupils.  It was decided that a picnic would be the perfect setting for a discussion about the different types of food and to practise simple food related dialogue.

Of course the pupils were excited to share and talk about the food and drinks that they had brought from home and the setting offered a real situation in which to use previously taught topic related language.

After the feasting pupils took part in an activity that involved them working in teams to collect pictures of food and correctly match them to the corresponding vocabulary in order to complete an order.

The pupils were divided into teams and each team was designated an order sheet and a basket containing the pictures of the food items on the list.

All baskets were lined up at one end of the field. The teams formed queues about twenty five metres away from their baskets.

On the count of three one player from each team would race to their basket, choose a food picture and race back to their team mates to place it next to the correct item on the order.  It was then the turn of the next player to run to the basket.  The first team to collect all orders and match them correctly was declared the winner!

The year two pupils embraced the chance to use the language they had been taught in the classroom to compete in an outdoor activity and all teams successfully completed the challenge.

Not only were pupils offered an alternative, engaging setting to interact using the language that they had been taught but they also had the chance to participate in a truly memorable English lesson!
