English Display Workshop :)

The English Display Competition was a great success during TELL1 with schools throughout Bentong and Karak competing.  This year all the schools from TELL1 and the TELL2 programme are working hard to create imaginative, decorative, informative and interactive displays in, and sometimes throughout, their schools.

Some examples of last year's English displays...

We held a workshop to inspire the teachers and to have them discuss different examples of classroom and language displays.  Through guided discussions, topic related activities and brainstorming the teachers were able to determine what they felt to be important for their pupils and schools and what should be included in their designs.

The workshop offered English teachers the chance to reflect on reasons why displays have been an issue to create in the past and to find solutions to these problems.  We were able to decide on what should be the focus when designing a display for the school and how to ensure that pupils can enjoy and learn from what has been created.

English teachers are working hard to think of original and winning concepts for their English displays and the Bentong mentors are always on hand to help in any way needed!

The judging will take place in October so good luck to all the schools taking part and remember to get in contact if you have any questions, problems or would like some support from the Bentong Brighton team!!

English Picnic and Language Games...

At SK Tuanku Fatimah Noraniah Mohd Yusof and Charlotte Lewis wanted to take the topic of 'Delicious Food' outside of the classroom and into the hearts and minds of the year two pupils.  It was decided that a picnic would be the perfect setting for a discussion about the different types of food and to practise simple food related dialogue.

Of course the pupils were excited to share and talk about the food and drinks that they had brought from home and the setting offered a real situation in which to use previously taught topic related language.

After the feasting pupils took part in an activity that involved them working in teams to collect pictures of food and correctly match them to the corresponding vocabulary in order to complete an order.

The pupils were divided into teams and each team was designated an order sheet and a basket containing the pictures of the food items on the list.

All baskets were lined up at one end of the field. The teams formed queues about twenty five metres away from their baskets.

On the count of three one player from each team would race to their basket, choose a food picture and race back to their team mates to place it next to the correct item on the order.  It was then the turn of the next player to run to the basket.  The first team to collect all orders and match them correctly was declared the winner!

The year two pupils embraced the chance to use the language they had been taught in the classroom to compete in an outdoor activity and all teams successfully completed the challenge.

Not only were pupils offered an alternative, engaging setting to interact using the language that they had been taught but they also had the chance to participate in a truly memorable English lesson!

Action Song and Public Speaking Competition 2014!

The annual Action Song and Public Speaking Competition included many brilliant performances and the pupils really put everything they had in to the event.  English teachers have been working tirelessly to create original choreography and the results were evident. The TELL2 mentors attended to support the teachers and participating children...it was a great show, if only everyone could win!

All the pupils looked great in their costumes and their positivity and excitement was inspiring!

The event is also an opportunity to catch up with old friends, colleagues and pupils from the TELL1 project!  It was good to see how all the pupils have grown and chat with the teachers who worked so hard during TELL1.

A huge congratulations to all the schools, teachers and pupils who took part!  All the hard work paid off and the pupils all enjoyed the effort that went in to rehearsals and the excitement of the day itself.
